Motorcycle Insurance and Safety Tips

New Gear?  Updated your Motorcycle Insurance Policy.

If your Texas motorcycle insurance policy does not cover customized gear, TXINSURANCEPRO can help you.  We have motorcycle insurance companies like Safeco and Progressive that cover up to $3000 in custom parts and equipment – but you have to make sure each piece of equipment is listed on your policy.  Any time you buy new leathers or safety equipment or customize your bike, update our service representatives before you head out on the highway.

Nine out of 10 motorcycle accidents involve untrained riders.

When you’re controlling this much force, it’s essential to have complete command of your motorcycle.  More than 90 percent of riders involved in accidents haven’t taken a formal motorcycle driver course.

Know your bike’s capabilities – how it performs in a curve or on slick roads and how quickly it can safely stop.  Errors like over braking, driving too fast or under cornering are major factors in many solo accidents.

Riders who attend the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s safe riding courses or are active in one of many approved groups that promote safe riding can get discounts on their Texas motorcycle insurance policy.  Do both, and you can reduce your payment by 10 percent or more.

In a crash, the SUV always wins.

When cars and motorcycles collide, it’s usually because the driver of the car failed to see the motorcycle driver.  With more SUVs on the road, it’s even more critical to take extra steps to become more visible.  Use your headlamps – both night and day – and wear yellow, red or orange jackets to make yourself easy to see.  Make a point of positioning your motorcycle in your lane for visibility.

Remember:  Ride Sober.

Driving impaired is more deadly for bikers than other drivers.  In fact more than half of all motorcycle deaths occur when the rider has been drinking.

You’re never too old to wear a helmet.

A motorcycle rider not wearing a helmet is five times more likely to sustain a critical head injury in a crash.  Buy a full-face helmet for the best protection for your head and eyes.  Wear other protective gear as well:  heavy leather or synthetic gloves, long pants and jacket and over the ankle leather boots.

This advice applies to all riders – not just teenagers learning to ride.  Today, more than 44 percent of all fatal motorcycle accidents involve riders in their 40s.  That’s three times higher than a decade ago.

Putting companies to work for you

February 19, 2010

(NAPS)—Car insurance may be one of the last things that comes to mind when you think about saving time, but the insurance company you choose can actually have a big impact on your time should trouble strike.

If you’re in an accident that results in a claim, you could spend days handling the claims/repair process yourself.

That’s one reason it’s a good idea to check out insurance options that can save you time. For instance, the concierge-level of claims service offered by The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies is a unique claims repair option that takes only 15 minutes to complete. Simply drop off the damaged vehicle at one of Progressive’s facilities offering this service and a claims representative handles the entire claims/repair process for you— from start to finish.

Here’s how the process works:

You can call or go online to report a claim—anytime of the day or night—and schedule an appointment to bring the vehicle to a nearby facility offering the concierge-level of claims service.

In about 15 minutes, you’re in a rental car (if included on your policy) with assurance that you’ll receive updates from your claims representative.

Your claims representative prepares a repair estimate andcontacts an auto body shop that has met strict quality requirements. Progressive and the shop reach an agreement on the cost of the repairs and the shop trans-ports the vehicle to the facility to begin repairs.

When work is finished, the vehicle is returned to the insurance facility, where your claims representative and the body shop inspect the repairs.

After the insurance company is satisfied with the repairs, you are called to pick up your car. You inspect the repairs and, if satisfied, drive off with a guarantee on those repairs for as long as you own the vehicle.

Throughout the process, you receive updates via phone or online. For more information, visit www.txinsurancepro.com.

Four Questions for Auto Insurance

February 19, 2010

Using the right tool for a job is key to success in any profession. Experts say the same principle applies when selecting an auto insurance policy. Having the right type of policy can help ensure that you, your employees and your business are all protected in the unfortunate event that one of your vehicles is involved in an accident.

If you’re a business owner and you or your employees use a vehicle for business-related deliveries or to carry certain materials to and from a job site, you may need a commercial auto insurance policy that’s tailored to more closely suit the needs—and risks—of a business vehicle operator.

Here are some questions that can help you determine if you might need a commercial auto policy instead of a personal auto policy, courtesy of TXINSURANCEPRO.COM

• Do you need more liability coverage than your personal auto policy provides? Generally, a commercial auto policy provides higher limits of liability, but less or no coverage in areas that are typically not associated with commercial auto risks.

• Do you need special coverage for situations associated with con-ducting business? Commercial auto policies also usually offer certain coverages—such as hired and non-owned auto coverage and coverage for towing a trailer for business use—that are not available with personal auto policies.

• Do you need to list any employees as drivers? You can do this with a commercial auto insurance policy.

• Do you use your vehicle for business purposes? If you use your vehicle for things like pizza or newspaper delivery, catering, door-to-door consulting service, landscaping or snowplowing service, logging business, day care/church retreat van service and/or farm-to-market delivery, you might need a commercial auto policy.

Travelers Texas Auto Insurance

February 1, 2010

Every day, the GEICO cavemen, Allstate’s good hands people, and your friendly neighborhood State Farm Agent that is always on your side at Nationwide sell you images of why they are the best company for you.  Let’s face it, we all work hard and want to save money on car insurance and home insurance.  As an insurance agent, I see the commercials you see every day.  As an independent insurance agent, I am faced with the task of presenting different companies to my clients.

When a client makes a special visit to my office to talk about their claims experience, as an agent I am forced to take another look at that company.  Recently, Regina H, one of my clients was involved in an accident and Travelers had to handle the claim.  After the Travelers Concierge Claims Center located at Crest Infinity of Plano, Texas repaired her car, Regina came to the office and stated the following:  “…David, this was the best insurance claims experience I’ve ever had!  I took my car the concierge place (claims center); they took my keys and gave me a perfect car back—no problems.  I don’t know if you can get me with Travelers, but I like that company.”

It is rare that we take time to recognize when an insurance company does well.  I say, “Kudos to the Travelers Texas Claims team and their representatives.”  I have started taking a closer look at their policies and their discounts.  Do I recommend Travelers on every deal?  The answer is no.  Since, as an independent insurance agent, I realize that one size does not fit all. Therefore, everyone does not always get the best rates through the same company. When it comes to your car insurance and your home insurance, make sure that you go beyond simply getting the lowest rates alone.  Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Is the company reputable?  The majority of the companies you see on television are good insurance companies.  They have to be.
  2. Are their rates good for you?  Face it, if you have perfect credit and you have a good driving record, every company will give you a good rate.  What about you?  Don’t just settle for the first name brand company’s prices.  Talk to an independent agent.
  3. How well do they handle claims?  An insurance company is only as good as your last claim.  You can get a cheap car insurance quote or a cheap home insurance quote, but if you have a claim, is your company going to respond like Travelers did for Regina?
  4. Do they offer package discounts?  Often insurance companies offer discounts for insuring auto and home together.

In the case of Regina H and Travelers, it is time for her annual review.  We will take a closer look at Travelers because they’ve apparently passed my 4 question test.  They have been around for about 150 years.  Travelers recently increased their auto and home package discount.  So, now Regina can get even better rates.  We all know how well the Concierge Claims Center handled Regina’s claims.  Also, the most recent rate was a good one.

Remember, this story when you’re shopping for car insurance or home insurance.  A good claims experience and a reputable company can go a long way saving you money and not costing you problems down the road.
